New Battery Rule Signals Big Future Market in Maharashtra
The state is creating rules for large-scale battery storage. Smart dealers should see this as a sign of a major new scrap source on the horizon.
The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has put out a new proposal. It’s about creating rules for how very large batteries connect to the state’s power grid.
For your shop, this news is not about today. It is about your future. This is the government building the foundation for a massive new market in Battery Energy Storage Systems, or BESS. Think of these not as car or inverter batteries, but as huge, container-sized power banks for the whole grid.
Our takeaway is simple: A new stream of battery scrap is coming. It will be big, and it will be different. You should start learning about it now.
What is changing
On September 22, 2026, the electricity regulator in Maharashtra announced a plan to amend the State Grid Code. This code is the rulebook for connecting to the power grid.
The new rules are for what the industry calls Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). These are giant battery packs used to store power from solar and wind projects, and release it when needed. The government wants to set clear rules for how they operate, schedule power, and share data.
Right now, this is just a proposal. It is not a final law. But it shows the government is serious about bringing many more of these large-scale batteries to Maharashtra. When you create rules for something, it means you expect a lot more of it to be built soon.
Why this is a big deal
This isn't about the lead-acid or small lithium-ion batteries you handle every day. This is a completely different scale of business.
- Today's Scrap: You mostly deal with batteries from cars, bikes, trucks, and inverters. They are measured in kilograms.
- Future BESS Scrap: These are industrial systems. A single BESS unit can be the size of a shipping container and weigh many tonnes. They contain complex electronics and different battery chemistries.
